Current state maximums for reference, courtesy of the IIHS. Last year, we've had Pennsylvania, Idaho, and Wyoming raise their maximum speed limit. It will be interesting to see how the map changes when 2016 rolls around.

The speed limits are too damned low!
I'm in Texas, though, where 85 is an awesome thing, especially out in the wasteland that is west Texas.

You're lucky, but here in the more populous waste lands of Houston, I'll be lucky to even see a speed limit sign of 70mph on the way to the race track, 60 miles south.

There has been talk about raising Washington from 70 to 75 on I-90 out in the middle of the state, which would be a godsend and an acknowledgement of the speed that is already being driven.

I live in Austin, where we have a limit of 85 on the toll road east of town. I rarely drive that way because it's just too far out of the way. The only reason they raised it, though, is because the state gets more money out of the toll company for raising the limit. It's supposed to increase traffic, but the road was so poorly planned that hardly anybody uses it even with the raised limit.

about time. A speed limit is supposed to be the fastest you can safely travel a section of road in ideal conditions with a driver of roughly average talent, not an arbitrary number.
Downtown Wisconsin Dells has a speed limit of 35. That is a safe and reasonable speed in winter when there is low traffic. On Memorial Day weekend there is so many cars and people that you'd need an Abrams tank and a callous disregard for human life to do 35. But the limit stays 35 because it's a limit, not a traffic control device.

I like the idea of higher speed limits. The down side for me is all my vehicles gas mileage drops like a rock above 70 mph. By eighty the fuel gauge moves so fast you think you might have a leak somewhere.

Sounds like you need to make some aerodynamic mods to improve high speed fuel economy:

Last year there were a few very welcome speed limit changes here in New Hampshire that did just that, acknowledged how fast people were already driving on restricted access highways that were fully capable of supporting those speeds. It is good to see the government isn't completely ignorant. The lawmakers drive the same roads we do I suppose.

I didn't realize Hawaii had a road with a speed limit as high as 60. Though to be honest when I saw that it was the H3 I realized that I've never actually looked at that speed limit sign as all the traffic is going at least 60mph.
Thank you for the depressing realization that I live in the slowest state of the union.

A very wise move! Because you know... a sandwich is only a sandwich, but a Manwich is a Meal!

They do. They think about how best to line their pockets with cash from companies they can do special favors for.

That infographic is hilarious. There's only like one single tollway going through bumblefuck central to southeast TX that has an 85 mph limit. Everywhere else is 60-70 mph with occasional stretches of some tollways being 75.
